The 12-hour general strike (Bangla Bandh) called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday partially affected life across West Bengal. The bandh was organized to protest police actions against demonstrators during the march to the state secretariat, Nabanna, on Tuesday.
The march was a response to the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata earlier this month. BJP’s state president, Sukanta Majumdar, justified the bandh as a necessary response to what he termed as the “autocratic regime” of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of ignoring public demands for justice in the case.
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari also condemned the police’s alleged excessive use of force during the student march, describing it as a peaceful protest. The police reportedly used batons, tear gas, and water cannons against demonstrators trying to reach Nabanna to demand the Chief Minister’s resignation.
Ahead of the bandh, Suvendu Adhikari warned that the BJP would bring the entire state to a halt if necessary. The BJP also set up a helpline to provide legal assistance to those arrested during the Nabanna protest.
In response, the TMC accused the BJP of exploiting the tragic incident to create unrest. TMC leader Kunal Ghosh claimed that the bandh call exposed the BJP’s intent to foment disturbances, arguing that the Nabanna Abhijan protests were backed by the BJP from the outset. He expressed confidence that the people of West Bengal would reject the BJP’s “game plan” and ensure normal life continues.
The state government announced that all necessary measures would be taken to ensure that the bandh does not disrupt daily life. Alapan Bandopadhyay, Chief Advisor to Mamata Banerjee, urged citizens not to participate in the strike. Transport services were operational, and shops, markets, and other business establishments remained open. State government employees were also advised to attend work as usual.
