Aakhir Tak – In Depth: The annual Banni Utsav in Devaragattu village, Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh, erupted in violence on Sunday, leaving at least 70 people injured. According to local officials, two individuals are in critical condition. The Banni Utsav, celebrated as part of the Dussehra festivities, features traditional stick fights, where villagers from rival factions battle to claim the idols of Mala Malleswara Swamy.
Local police had anticipated potential unrest and deployed additional personnel to manage crowds and prevent confrontations. However, the intensity of the ritualistic fights overwhelmed security efforts, leading to bloody clashes between rival factions vying for control of the idols.
Many injured individuals were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment, while police continue to monitor the situation. While the Banni Utsav is considered an integral part of local tradition, its violent nature has sparked concerns. Residents remain divided; some strongly defend the cultural significance of the event, while others call for stricter control to prevent further injuries.
