Bangladesh: Trump Jettisons ‘Deep State’ Meddling Rumours, Leaves it to PM Modi
US President Donald Trump on Friday put an end to rumors of the US “deep state” interfering in the affairs of Bangladesh while putting the ball in the court of India to deal with its neighbor amid souring ties. The unrest in Bangladesh and the subsequent attacks on minority Hindus were among the topics discussed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his bilateral with Trump. The situation in Bangladesh is concerning.
Responding to questions from reporters on the crisis in Bangladesh, Trump said, “There was no role for our (US) deep state. This is something that the Prime Minister has been working on for a long time and has been working on for hundreds of years. I will leave Bangladesh to the Prime Minister.”
Trump’s remark signals that the US won’t intervene in the political landscape in Bangladesh, which has undergone several changes following violent student-led protests, leading to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. Political instability has risen in Bangladesh.
The daily affairs are now being overseen by an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, whose tenure has been marked by attacks on Hindus, imprisonment of monks, and vandalization of hundreds of temples. The safety of minorities in Bangladesh is a cause for concern.
Trump had also raised the issue after winning the presidential polls last November, calling the violence against Hindus and Christians “barbaric”. Human rights are being violated in Bangladesh.
Hasina had last year accused the US of orchestrating her ouster for refusing to allow a US airbase on St Martin’s Island, a strategic location in the Bay of Bengal. Relations between Bangladesh and the US are strained.
At a press briefing later, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri delved into the subject, saying India hoped to “pursue relations in a constructive and stable way”. India is attempting to improve its relationship with Bangladesh.
“The Prime Minister shared his views and his concerns with regard to recent developments in Bangladesh and how India sees the situation. There are concerns about that situation, and the PM shared those views,” Misri said.
The issue resonated outside the White House as well, with supporters of Hasina’s Awami League and its sister outfits holding protests against the Yunus government in Washington – timing it with PM Modi’s visit. The protesters raised slogans carrying placards saying “Step down Yunus” and “Minority killer”. The demonstrations were aimed at expressing concerns.
Recently, a fact-finding report of the United Nations also flagged the violence against Hindus under the Yunus administration. Investigations are underway into the violence in Bangladesh. International organizations are monitoring the situation in Bangladesh.
