Bajrang Punia Slams Brij Bhushan’s Remarks

Bajrang Punia, Olympic medallist and recently inducted Congress member, hit back at BJP leader and former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for his comments on Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics. Singh had stated that Phogat deserved to be disqualified, attributing her Olympic loss to divine punishment. Punia, reacting strongly to Singh’s remarks, accused him of gloating over Phogat’s loss, questioning his patriotism.

In an exclusive interview with India Today/Aaj Tak, Punia expressed his dismay at Singh’s mentality, highlighting that Vinesh Phogat’s medal was not just her own but represented the pride of 140 crore Indians. He further condemned the BJP’s IT cell for mocking Phogat’s Olympic journey, suggesting that those celebrating her disqualification are not true patriots. Punia remarked, “We have been fighting for the country since childhood, and now they dare to teach us about patriotism. They are molesting girls.”

Brij Bhushan Singh, accused of sexual harassment by several women wrestlers, had earlier claimed that Phogat lost her chance at an Olympic medal because of her alleged unfair conduct during the trials. Singh accused Phogat of taking another wrestler’s spot, which, according to him, justified her failure at the Olympics.

Reacting to these accusations, Punia criticized Singh for naming Phogat in the context of the harassment case, stating that if the victims had the courage to slap their harasser at the time, Singh would have been slapped many times. Punia also pointed fingers at the BJP, accusing the party of shielding Singh and using central agencies to target the wrestlers who had spoken out.

Punia explained his decision to join the Congress, crediting the party and other opposition forces for supporting the wrestlers during their protests. He clarified that while he would not be running in the Haryana Assembly elections, only Vinesh Phogat would contest. Punia’s sharp words reflect the deep-rooted conflict within Indian wrestling and highlight ongoing struggles against harassment and unfair practices.
