A communal clash broke out during the immersion of Durga idols in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, resulting in the death of a 22-year-old man and several injuries. The violence erupted in the Mahrajganj Bazar area over the playing of loud music during the procession, leading to stone pelting and gunfire.
As tensions escalated, vehicles were set ablaze, and the police had to intervene using force. Following the incident, Bahraich police detained 30 individuals, and Salman, from whose house gunshots were reportedly fired, was arrested.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his concern over the event and assured that the culprits would not go unpunished. In a statement, he said, “Those who disrupted law and order in Mahsi district will face strict action.” He further instructed officials to ensure the peaceful continuation of the idol immersions.
According to police reports, Ram Gopal Mishra, who was part of the procession, was shot and later died in the hospital. Mishra’s family has refused to perform his last rites until the accused are arrested.
Bahraich Superintendent of Police Vrinda Shukla suspended two police officers for negligence. Investigations continue with police examining video footage to identify other suspects involved.
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party leader ST Hasan called for calm and urged people not to take the law into their hands. He emphasized that instigating communal violence weakens both society and the nation.
