In a significant development, the Maharashtra government has decided to fast-track the Badlapur sexual assault case, appointing senior advocate Ujjwal Nikam as the Special Public Prosecutor. Nikam, renowned for his role in high-profile cases such as the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, the Shakti Mills gangrape, and the Kopardi rape and murder, will lead the prosecution in this sensitive case.
The case involves the sexual abuse of two young girls by a sweeper at a kindergarten in Badlapur, located in Maharashtra’s Thane district. The incident has triggered widespread outrage across the city, leading to massive protests, including the blockade of trains at the Badlapur railway station.
Responding to public outcry, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ensure a thorough probe. Fadnavis also assured that the case would be processed in a fast-track court, emphasizing the need for swift justice.
Nikam’s appointment comes shortly after his reappointment as Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) in all cases he previously handled before contesting the Lok Sabha polls on a BJP ticket, where he lost to Congress leader Varsha Gaikwad. Despite the electoral loss, Nikam remains a trusted figure in Maharashtra’s legal circles, particularly in cases that demand urgent and meticulous prosecution.
