Badlapur Encounter: Aggressive Accused Shot in Self-Defense
New details have emerged in the case of Akshay Shinde, the Badlapur sex abuse accused who was killed in a police encounter. Inspector Sanjay Shinde, who was part of the police team transporting the accused from Taloja Jail to Thane, revealed that the shooting occurred in self-defense. Akshay Shinde had turned aggressive during the transit and opened fire on the police officers.
Inspector Shinde, who was seated next to the driver, explained that he received a call from Assistant Police Inspector (API) Nilesh More, who was in the back of the van with Akshay Shinde. API More informed him that Shinde had become aggressive and was verbally abusing the officers, questioning his arrest.
To deescalate the situation, Inspector Shinde stopped the van and attempted to calm Akshay Shinde. However, as the vehicle neared the Mumbra bypass, the situation intensified. Akshay Shinde grabbed API More’s pistol, and during the struggle, a shot was fired, hitting More in the thigh.
The accused then fired two more rounds, which missed. Fearing for his life and the safety of his colleagues, Inspector Shinde acted in self-defense and fired a single shot, incapacitating Akshay Shinde.
According to the official report, a total of four rounds were fired: one by Akshay Shinde, injuring API More, two missed shots, and one by Inspector Shinde in self-defense. All shell casings were recovered from the scene by forensic teams.
Inspector Shinde defended his actions, stating they were necessary to protect himself and his colleagues in a life-threatening situation. Meanwhile, the police have requested that the case be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as it may be classified as a custodial death.
