Assam Bill Bars Clerics from Muslim Marriage Registration

The Assam Cabinet has approved the Muslim Marriage Registration Bill, 2024, which prohibits clerics or qazis from registering Muslim marriages. This significant legislative change also bans the registration of child marriages. The bill is set to be introduced during the Monsoon session of the Assam Assembly on Friday.

According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the bill stipulates that marriages involving individuals under 18 years of age will not be registered. Additionally, the authority for marriage registration will shift from qazis to sub-registrars.

Previously, the registration of Muslim marriages and divorces was managed by qazis, who are clerics in the Muslim community. Earlier this year, the government repealed the Assam Moslem Marriages and Divorces Registration Act of 1935 through an ordinance, setting the stage for this new legislative measure.

The new bill aims to streamline the registration process and ensure compliance with age regulations, marking a significant shift in how Muslim marriages are formally recognized in Assam.
