Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently announced the cancellation of the two-hour Friday namaz break in the Assam Legislative Assembly. This move, aimed at enhancing productivity, marks the end of a long-standing tradition that allowed Muslim lawmakers and staff to take a break for namaz, or Friday prayers.
Chief Minister Sarma expressed gratitude to Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary and all legislators for supporting this “historic decision.” He emphasized that by eliminating the Jumma break, the Assam Assembly is prioritizing legislative productivity over outdated practices rooted in colonial times.
“By doing away with the 2-hour Jumma break, Assam Assembly has prioritized productivity and shed another vestige of colonial baggage,” stated Sarma. He further highlighted that the Assembly should operate without considerations of religious practices, setting a precedent for a more uniform legislative schedule.
The unanimous decision by all assembly members will now see the Assembly’s proceedings start at 9:30 AM every day, including Fridays, without the previous two-hour break from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. This significant change is expected to streamline the Assembly’s schedule and focus on legislative duties.
The cancellation of the Friday namaz break in Assam’s Assembly is seen as a broader move to modernize the institution’s functioning and remove practices considered outdated. The Chief Minister’s decision aligns with his ongoing efforts to reform various sectors in the state, positioning Assam’s legislative body as one that prioritizes governance and productivity.
