The Delhi Police Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has arrested Deepak Gupta, the brother-in-law of BharatPe co-founder Ashneer Grover, on allegations of fraud and fund misappropriation. This arrest follows an FIR lodged in May 2023 against Ashneer Grover, his wife Madhuri Grover, and other family members, under charges of criminal breach of trust, cheating, and forgery.
Deepak Gupta, who is married to Madhuri Grover’s sister, is currently being held at the EOW Police Station. He is set to be presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) at Saket court soon. Meanwhile, Madhuri Grover is facing multiple charges, including sections 406, 408, 409 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery), 120B (criminal conspiracy), and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence).
This arrest is in line with a civil suit already filed by BharatPe against Ashneer Grover and his family members, seeking damages of up to Rs 81 crore. The company has accused the Grover family of misusing company funds for personal gains.
In December 2022, BharatPe filed a criminal complaint against five individuals, including Ashneer Grover, his wife Madhuri, her brother Shwetank Jain, her father Suresh Jain, and Deepak Gupta. Subsequently, in May 2023, the EOW registered an FIR, naming Grover, Madhuri, and their family members as key suspects in the fraud case.
