Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has made a significant announcement, stating that he will resign from his position tomorrow (Tuesday, September 17). This comes just days after the Supreme Court granted him bail in the liquor policy case.
AAP leader and MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj confirmed that Kejriwal will meet with Lt Governor VK Saxena at 4:30 pm on Tuesday to tender his resignation.
In the meantime, senior leaders of AAP are currently holding discussions regarding the party’s next steps. The legislative party is expected to finalize the name of the next Chief Minister in a meeting scheduled for 11:30 am on Tuesday.
Kejriwal has been holding one-on-one meetings with senior party leaders to seek their input on who should take over as the next Chief Minister. The AAP National Convenor convened a meeting of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC), where senior leaders and Delhi Cabinet ministers were present.
Speaking to reporters, Bharadwaj said, “The second session of this meeting with the MLAs will take place tomorrow to finalize the new Chief Minister.”
On Sunday, AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Raghav Chadha met with Kejriwal at his residence to discuss potential candidates for the Delhi Chief Minister post. This came a day after Kejriwal’s bombshell announcement about his resignation.
As speculation regarding the next CM candidate intensified, opposition parties criticized Kejriwal’s move, calling it a “PR stunt” and a “gimmick” aimed at restoring his image.
During his first address after being released from Tihar Jail on Friday, Kejriwal announced his decision to resign. He further stated that a legislative party meeting would be held within the next two days to finalize his replacement.
“I will resign from the Chief Minister’s position in two days. I will not sit in the Chief Minister’s chair until the people give their verdict. I will go to every house and street and will not sit in the chair until I get a verdict from the people,” Kejriwal said.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sisodia also echoed Kejriwal’s sentiments, saying he would only return as Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister if the public approved of his honesty.
“I worked honestly, but false allegations were made against me. I was imprisoned for 17 months. After two years of legal battle, the Supreme Court has asked me to return to work, but I will not sit in the Deputy CM chair until the people decide. Elections are in three to four months. Only if the public approves my honesty will I take the position again,” Sisodia’s tweet read.
During his Sunday address, Kejriwal ruled out Sisodia as his successor, stating that Sisodia would also take office only after public approval.
Sources close to AAP revealed that Kejriwal would vacate the Chief Minister’s residence within 15 days after stepping down. This decision was reportedly made by Kejriwal during a closed-door meeting with senior AAP leaders.
