Arvind Kejriwal’s Custody Extended Till September 3 in Liquor Policy Case
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s judicial custody has been extended till September 3, 2024, in connection with the ongoing Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case related to the Delhi excise policy. The decision was made during a court hearing on Tuesday, where Kejriwal appeared via video conferencing.
Kejriwal, who was initially arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21, 2024, in a money laundering case linked to the excise policy, had been granted bail by the trial court on June 20, 2024. However, the Delhi High Court overturned this bail order on June 21, 2024. Following this, Kejriwal moved the Supreme Court on June 22, 2024, seeking relief from the High Court’s decision.
On June 26, 2024, Kejriwal was arrested by the CBI concerning the excise policy case, further complicating his legal battles. Despite the Supreme Court granting him bail in the ED’s money laundering case on July 11, 2024, the CBI continued to pursue the case against him.
Kejriwal has now filed petitions in the Supreme Court, challenging his arrest by the CBI and seeking bail. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case on September 5, 2024.
In defense of their actions, the CBI has argued before the Supreme Court that Kejriwal’s arrest was necessary due to his alleged evasiveness and non-cooperation during interrogations regarding his role in the excise policy scam. The upcoming court proceedings will be crucial in determining the next steps in this high-profile case.
