Amit Shah on Wayanad Landslides: Kerala Given Early Warning

Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the Rajya Sabha on the recent Wayanad landslides, stating that the Kerala government had been warned about the impending disaster. Shah revealed that an early warning was issued on July 23, seven days before the landslides struck, followed by additional warnings on July 24 and 25. The warning on July 26 indicated a possibility of heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm, increasing the risk of landslides.

Details of the Wayanad Landslides

On July 30, massive landslides hit Wayanad district, causing significant devastation. The landslides claimed the lives of at least 158 people and injured over 200. The affected villages include Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha. The landslides occurred within a span of four hours, with some residents being swept away into the Chaliyar river.

Government Response and Relief Efforts

Following the early warnings, the Centre dispatched nine NDRF teams to Kerala on July 23. Despite these precautions, the tragedy unfolded, leading Shah to question the Kerala government’s response. He emphasized that the Centre has invested over Rs 2,000 crore in developing the early warning system since 2014.

A total of 45 relief camps have been established in Wayanad, accommodating 3,069 displaced individuals. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, with potential risks of further landslides due to ongoing heavy rainfall.
