The Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully demonstrated its ability to shoot down a Chinese spy balloon-like object flying at an altitude of over 15 kilometers. This operation took place a few months ago under the jurisdiction of the Eastern Air Command, as per sources within the defense establishment.
A Rafale fighter jet was involved in the controlled exercise, targeting the high-altitude balloon. Though smaller than the Chinese spy balloon shot down by the US Air Force earlier in 2023, this balloon had a payload attached and was destroyed using an inventory missile at over 55,000 feet altitude.
This exercise highlights the Air Force’s preparedness to neutralize airborne threats at high altitudes. It comes in the wake of growing concerns regarding Chinese surveillance using similar balloon technologies. In early 2023, the US Air Force famously downed a Chinese spy balloon that had drifted across North America for several days before being shot down off the coast of South Carolina by an F-22 fighter jet.
Following the incident, reports of similar balloon sightings increased, raising global concerns about China’s surveillance capabilities. In India, there have been similar reports of balloon sightings over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. While no immediate action was taken, the balloon was observed for several days before it drifted away.
Experts suggest that these high-altitude balloons may be equipped with steering mechanisms, allowing them to remain stationary over areas of interest for extended periods.
The Indian Air Force’s successful training exercise demonstrates the country’s readiness to tackle airborne threats effectively. As concerns over surveillance activities grow, such exercises may play a critical role in securing national airspace from potential threats.
