AI ‘Nudify’ Apps: The Dark Side of Technology Unveiled
Imagine you’re traveling on public transport, unaware that someone is secretly taking your photo. By the time you reach your stop, they have created a hyperrealistic nude image of you using AI-powered “nudify” apps. This is the terrifying reality of a new wave of digital extortion tools that are spreading rapidly.
The Rise of AI-Powered Blackmail
The desperation for quick loans drove Rishabh into the hands of unscrupulous loan apps. Burdened by high-interest debts and a poor credit score, he had no choice but to seek funds through shady means. When he defaulted on his payments, the calls turned threatening. However, the real nightmare began when his wife received an AI-generated nude image of herself that looked disturbingly real. Within minutes, friends and family members received the same image.
Delhi-based cybersecurity expert Prabesh Choudhary explained, “Loan sharks will do anything to get their money back. These apps have access to your phone gallery and can create fake nudes in seconds to blackmail you.”
The Role of AI in Creating Fake Nudes
Creating non-consensual fake nudes is not a new concept, but AI has made the process alarmingly simple. With generative AI models trained on vast data sets of clothed and nude bodies, these apps can remove clothing from images and replace them with highly realistic nude representations. The result is so convincing that even school-age teenagers are using these tools.
A survey conducted in the US by the anti-child sexual abuse organization Thorn found that one in ten minors knew someone who had created deepfake nudes. The trend has reached India too, with recent incidents involving minors sharing AI-generated nudes of classmates.
Telegram: The Open Web’s Darknet
While companies like Google, Meta, and TikTok have attempted to limit access to such tools by banning keywords like “undress,” Telegram remains a hotbed for these illicit services. Hundreds of Telegram channels offer “undressing” services, allowing users to upload images and receive doctored nudes. These services are often available on a freemium model, with costs ranging from ₹199 to ₹19,999 for more advanced packages.
Ethical Concerns and Legal Remedies
Sam Gregory, executive director of Witness, an organization that promotes ethical AI use, explained that “undressing” apps mislead people about what they do. They use a technique called inpainting to replace clothing with nude skin that matches the lighting, shadows, and contours of the original image. The apps are designed to cater to male fantasies, often altering images to include feminine characteristics, regardless of the original photo’s gender.
For victims, the path to justice is arduous. While Google offers a way to request the removal of non-consensual nude images from search results, it’s nearly impossible to erase these images from private messaging platforms like Telegram.
Experts advise victims to document instances of image abuse by saving screenshots and video files. This evidence can be useful in filing takedown requests or legal actions. Unfortunately, the damage is often done long before any remedy can take effect.
Protecting Yourself from AI-Driven Extortion
To protect yourself, it is crucial to be cautious about the apps you download and the permissions you grant. Keep personal photos private, and report any misuse of AI technology to relevant authorities immediately.
While technological advances have brought incredible benefits, they have also opened doors for new forms of abuse. As AI continues to evolve, it’s more important than ever to stay informed and vigilant against its darker applications.
