The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of paying cash to former Goa MLAs for election expenses as part of a broader conspiracy linked to the Delhi liquor policy scam. According to the CBI’s final chargesheet, AAP allegedly paid Rs 90-100 crore to influence the excise policy in its favor, and Rs 44.5 crore in cash was sent for the 2022 Goa polls.
Cash Payments to Ex-MLAs
Two former Goa MLAs who contested the last Assembly polls on AAP tickets revealed that they received cash payments from a party volunteer for their election expenses. Delhi MLA Durgesh Pathak, who was in charge of AAP’s Goa campaign, reportedly approached Mahadev Narayan Naik and Satyavijay Naik, encouraging them to run from Shiroda and Valpoi, respectively.
The chargesheet claims, “All the expenditures for the campaigning done by the candidates of AAP were not paid by the candidates; it was paid by the party in cash.” Satyavijay Naik specifically mentioned that Chanpreet Singh Rayat, an AAP volunteer and accused in the case, allegedly gave him Rs 15-17 lakh in instalments of Rs 1-2 lakh for election expenses.
Kejriwal’s Alleged Role in the Conspiracy
The CBI’s chargesheet also implicated Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the conspiracy, claiming that he demanded monetary support for his party when the policy was being formulated. Kejriwal allegedly reassured all AAP candidates at a meeting held at Hotel Cidade De Goa that they need not worry about campaign expenses and should focus solely on campaigning.
The AAP has denied these allegations, branding them as a conspiracy against the party. Kejriwal, who was arrested by the CBI in June on corruption charges, is currently awaiting a Supreme Court verdict on his petition challenging the arrest.
