Pitru Paksha, a sacred period in Hinduism dedicated to honoring one’s ancestors, is observed with great devotion. In 2024, Pitru Paksha begins on September 17 and concludes on Sarva Pitru Amavasya on September 2. During this time, Hindus perform Shradh and offer donations to appease their ancestors.
There are specific rules to be followed during Pitru Paksha, such as refraining from cutting hair or beard and showing respect to elders. Importantly, there are certain items that should not be purchased during this period, as it is believed that doing so could displease the ancestors, leading to hardships in life.
Salt: It is advised not to purchase salt during Pitru Paksha, though it is encouraged to donate it. Buying salt during this time is believed to bring illnesses, so it is better to stock up on salt before the Shradh period begins.
Mustard oil: Purchasing mustard oil during Pitru Paksha is considered inauspicious. It is believed that both the ancestors and Lord Shani could be displeased by this, bringing misfortune.
Broom: The broom is associated with Goddess Lakshmi, and buying one during Pitru Paksha can lead to financial troubles. It is best to avoid purchasing a broom during this period.
New clothes and jewelry: Pitru Paksha is a time to live a simple, spiritual life. Buying new clothes or jewelry can displease the ancestors, so it is recommended to avoid such purchases.
Vehicles and property: Purchasing vehicles, land, or property during Pitru Paksha is also considered inauspicious. Such purchases can bring financial losses and other unwanted issues.
Apart from these items, it is also advised to refrain from purchasing or consuming meat and alcohol during Pitru Paksha. Doing so not only invites personal difficulties but also disturbs the peace of the ancestors’ souls.
