In a dramatic wildlife rescue operation, 24 crocodiles were saved from residential areas in Vadodara, Gujarat, between August 27 and 29, 2024. The heavy rains during these days caused the Vishwamitri river to overflow, leading to an unusual number of crocodile sightings in urban areas. The Vishwamitri river, home to around 440 crocodiles, often sees these reptiles moving into nearby localities during monsoon flooding, especially when water is released from the Ajwa dam.
Forest Officer Karansinh Rajput confirmed that alongside the 24 rescued crocodiles, the team also saved 75 other animals, including snakes, cobras, large turtles, and a porcupine. The smallest crocodile rescued was two feet long, while the largest, a massive 14 feet, was caught in Kamnath Nagar, where residents had reported its presence. Two other large crocodiles, each 11 feet long, were rescued from EME Circle and near MS University’s Zoology Department.
Remarkably, no incidents of crocodile-human conflict were reported during this period, despite the close encounters. Rajput explained that crocodiles usually do not attack humans and primarily feed on fish and small animals in the river. He highlighted a recent viral video showing a crocodile eating a stray dog, which is a rare but natural occurrence.
As the water level in the Vishwamitri river recedes, all rescued crocodiles and reptiles will be released back into their natural habitat. The authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any crocodile sightings immediately to ensure their safety and the well-being of the reptiles.
