In a tragic incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Farrukhabad, two men have been arrested on charges of abetment to suicide following the deaths of two Dalit girls, aged 15 and 18. The girls were found hanging from a tree on August 27, prompting a police investigation that led to the arrests of Pawan and Deepak.
The family members of the girls filed a complaint against the accused, leading to their detention. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the girls, who were close friends and resided in the same neighborhood, had a history of communicating with Pawan and Deepak. The girls left their homes on the night of August 26, intending to visit a nearby temple on Janmashtami but never returned. The following day, their bodies were discovered hanging from a tree, with two stoles tied together.
During the investigation, police recovered a SIM card from the younger girl’s clothes, revealing it belonged to Deepak. It was discovered that the girls frequently spoke to the accused using this SIM card, often removing it and erasing the call history afterward. The father of one of the girls alleged in his complaint that both Pawan and Deepak were harassing his daughters.
The postmortem confirmed the cause of death as suicide, ruling out the family’s allegations of murder. Senior police officials stated that no injury marks were found on the bodies, but the exact reason behind the suicides remains unclear. The incident has caused widespread outrage, with opposition parties criticizing the state government’s handling of the case.
The Samajwadi Party, Congress, and Aam Aadmi Party have all demanded justice for the victims and questioned the effectiveness of the investigation. They urged authorities to thoroughly probe the matter and ensure that such tragedies do not repeat.
The case highlights the vulnerability faced by young girls in rural areas and raises concerns about the need for better protection and mental health awareness. As the investigation continues, the families of the victims hope for answers and justice for their daughters.
