Many users took to X, urging platform owner Elon Musk to take action against Stanton’s offensive posts.
Stanton’s account, boasting over 180,000 followers, became notorious for sharing hateful content. This included derogatory cartoons and memes targeting Indians, such as depicting them defecating in public and praising tactics to drive Indians away from predominantly white neighborhoods. Stanton’s account also shared offensive posts against Jews and Africans, further fueling public outrage.
The hashtag “suspended” quickly gained traction on X, with hundreds of users celebrating the account’s removal. The debate intensified when users highlighted the platform’s perceived failure to address racist content swiftly. One prominent user, Akshit Singh, tagged the account to the attention of India’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and the UK High Commission in India, calling for stronger action against hate speech.
Public criticism also extended to Elon Musk, who has been accused of allowing hateful and racist content to thrive on the platform. “Musk has opened the gates of hell,” commented an X user, reflecting widespread frustration with the platform’s current content moderation policies. This incident has once again sparked discussions on how social media platforms handle hate speech and the responsibilities of tech giants in regulating their platforms.
