Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sharply criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her recent remark connecting the unrest in Kolkata with the situation in Bangladesh. The controversy began when Banerjee commented, “If Bengal burns, then Assam and Delhi too shall burn,” drawing a parallel between local protests and international tensions.
Reacting to the statement, Himanta Sarma accused Mamata Banerjee of attempting to incite unrest across India with what he termed as “politics of failure.” In a direct response, Sarma tweeted, “Didi, how dare you threaten Assam? Don’t show us your bloodshot eyes. Don’t try to set India on fire with your divisive politics.”
Mamata Banerjee’s remarks have sparked strong reactions from several political figures. Assam BJP leader Piyush Hazarika condemned her, stating, “She can’t bully or threaten us. She has failed to manage her state’s law and order and now aims to create fear elsewhere.” Union Minister and Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar labeled her comments as “anti-national.”
Banerjee’s controversial statement was made during the Trinamool Congress’s student wing’s foundation day event. She criticized the BJP over recent violence during a bandh (strike) and the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ protest march. Her comments came amidst heightened political tension following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata, leading to widespread criticism of her government.
Mamata Banerjee also drew a parallel with the protests in Bangladesh, emphasizing cultural similarities while acknowledging that “Bangladesh is a different country.” However, she accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of instigating unrest in Bengal, warning, “If you burn Bengal, Assam, the North-East, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi will also burn.”
The bandh called by the BJP escalated into chaos as clashes erupted between BJP workers, TMC supporters, and police across Bengal. BJP leader Priyangu Pandey reported incidents of violence, including bombs being hurled and shots fired at his vehicle in Bhatpara.
