The recent release of Jashimuddin Rahmani, the chief of the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), from a Bangladeshi prison has raised significant security concerns in India. The caretaker government in Bangladesh, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has made the controversial decision to free Rahmani, a move that has alarmed security agencies across the border. The ABT, a terrorist organization affiliated with al-Qaida, has been actively trying to establish a jihadi network in India, particularly through sleeper cells.
Rahmani, who was convicted for the murder of a blogger, was released on parole on Monday, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune. His release is particularly concerning for India, given that several terrorists linked to ABT have been arrested on Indian soil in the past. In May this year, Assam Police arrested two ABT operatives, Bahar Mia and Rarely Mia, at Guwahati railway station, further indicating the group’s persistent efforts to infiltrate India.
The ABT, banned in Bangladesh in 2015, later rebranded itself as Ansar al-Islam, which was subsequently banned in 2017. The group has maintained close ties with Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), with reports indicating that LeT partnered with ABT to carry out terrorist activities in India’s northeastern states. Intelligence inputs from 2022 revealed that around 50 to 100 ABT cadres were planning to infiltrate Tripura, highlighting the ongoing threat to Indian security.
Under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh had been a strong ally in combating terrorism, with her regime taking significant steps to curb anti-India forces within the country. However, the recent shift in power, marked by the ousting of Hasina following violent protests, has led to fears that groups hostile to India might regain influence. These concerns have been exacerbated by the release of Rahmani and other ABT leaders, raising alarms about the potential resurgence of terrorism in the region.
A report by The Society to Harmonise Aspirations for Responsible Engagement (SHARE), a think tank led by former IAS officer Radha Krishna Mathur, has warned of the dire consequences for India, particularly in the northeastern states of Assam and Tripura. The report highlighted that between 2022 and 2023, over 60 ABT members were arrested in these states, with more than 30 of them being Bangladeshi nationals.
Anti-India sentiments in Bangladesh have grown, fueled by a pro-Jamaat and pro-Pakistan narrative that blames India for various domestic issues, including the recent floods. The release of Rahmani is seen as part of a broader plan that poses a significant threat to India’s security, particularly in the northeastern region.
