India Prepares for Mpox Threat, Hospitals, Airports Alerted: Sources
India has heightened its vigilance against the mpox virus, a global public health emergency as declared by the World Health Organization (WHO). The government has initiated precautionary measures, instructing hospitals to be on the lookout for patients exhibiting rashes and to prepare isolation wards, according to Health Ministry sources.
Three key hospitals in Delhi—Safdarjung Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital—have been designated as nodal centers for mpox-related cases. These hospitals will conduct RT-PCR tests and nasal swabs on suspected patients to confirm the presence of the virus.
Airports across the country have also been placed on high alert to prevent the potential spread of mpox. The new strain of the virus, recently detected globally, is more potent and spreads easily through close contact, including sexual interactions. Despite this, India has not yet reported any cases of the new strain, though neighboring Pakistan recently confirmed three cases from travelers returning from the UAE.
The WHO’s decision to declare mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years comes after a new, more virulent strain of the virus was detected. This strain poses a higher risk of death compared to the previous version, emphasizing the need for increased vigilance.
Between June 2022 and May 2023, India reported 30 cases of mpox, mostly among foreign nationals. However, Health Ministry officials have reassured that those vaccinated against smallpox are unlikely to contract the virus, and at present, there is no requirement for additional vaccination efforts.
