Doctors across India are united in demanding swift justice for the trainee doctor who was tragically raped and murdered in Kolkata. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has taken over the investigation, has already summoned eight doctors and other medical staff from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for questioning.
Protests have erupted nationwide, with medical professionals calling for stricter laws to prevent such heinous crimes in the future. The Delhi Medical Association (DMA) has declared a 24-hour strike starting Saturday, with Dr. Alok Bhandari, President of DMA, expressing deep frustration over the lack of progress in the case.
During the ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest, which began on the eve of Independence Day, a group of 40 to 50 people vandalized the RG Kar Hospital. The Kolkata Police have arrested ten individuals and detained three others in connection with the vandalism. The protest will continue today, with various Resident Doctor’s Associations (RDAs) holding a joint protest march starting at 2 PM at Nirman Bhavan.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has also announced a nationwide withdrawal of services by doctors for 24 hours, beginning at 6 AM on Saturday, to protest the hospital vandalism.
Political and social groups have joined the protests. The Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) has called for a 12-hour strike across West Bengal, while the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Mahila Morcha plans to hold silent candlelight marches in all district headquarters today. The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) will protest at Azad Maidan in Mumbai, while Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association has declared a day-long cease-work.
The semi-naked body of the 32-year-old trainee doctor was discovered on August 9 in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer connected to Kolkata Police, has been arrested in connection with the crime.
