Tragic Flood at Delhi Coaching Centre: Survivor’s Account
On July 27, 2024, a devastating flood claimed the lives of three IAS aspirants at Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar, Delhi. The basement of the coaching centre, initially intended for storage, was converted into a library. The tragedy unfolded as the basement, with a ceiling height of over 13 feet, filled with water within minutes.
Survivor’s Heart-Wrenching Recollection
Rishabh Pal, a 21-year-old civil service aspirant from Ghaziabad, vividly recalls the horrifying experience. “The library was submerged in water in just three to four minutes,” Pal stated. He and about 15 other students managed to escape, but around 15 more were trapped inside. Pal remembers the comforting words of Tanya Soni, one of the victims: “There’s no need to panic; we will be saved.”
Despite Tanya’s attempts to form a human chain to aid in the escape, the swift rise of the water made it impossible. Pal, who last saw Tanya and Shreya Yadav (25) standing on a table, managed to climb the stairs with the help of a staff member.
The Response and Rescue Efforts
According to Pal, the staff acted quickly, bringing a rope to assist those still trapped. However, he noted that Nevin Dalwin (28) was not visible in the library when he escaped. The swift response from the employees prevented further casualties, but Pal criticized the delay in distress calls and the lack of necessary equipment from NDRF officials who arrived around 10 pm.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
In connection with the incident, seven individuals, including the centre’s owner and coordinator, have been arrested. The investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge about the response and the building’s safety measures.
The tragic flooding at Rau’s IAS Study Circle has left a deep impact on the survivors and the community. The quick action of some individuals helped save lives, but the loss of three promising young aspirants remains a heart-wrenching reminder of the importance of safety measures in such facilities.
