Wayanad Landslides: 158 Dead, Rescue Efforts Intensify
The recent landslides in Wayanad, Kerala, have claimed at least 158 lives, with more than 200 individuals injured. The disaster struck the hilly areas near Meppadi, hitting Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha villages.
Current Situation
Heavy rainfall triggered three major landslides within a four-hour period on Tuesday. The landslides have led to widespread destruction, with several residents swept away into the Chaliyar river. Over 180 people are feared trapped under debris as rescue teams race against time.
In response, the government has established 45 relief camps across Wayanad, providing shelter to 3,069 individuals. Social media images show extensive damage, including uprooted trees and collapsed houses, affecting the district known for its scenic beauty and tea plantations.
Ongoing Rescue Operations
Rescue operations are in full swing with multiple agencies involved. The Indian Army has deployed 225 personnel to assist in the rescue efforts. Additional troops have been moved from Thiruvananthapuram and Bengaluru to Calicut to support the operation. The Army has already rescued over 1,000 people using temporary structures after a critical bridge was washed away.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are also actively involved, searching through rubble and collapsed structures for survivors. Helpline numbers 9656938689 and 8086010833 have been set up for assistance and information.
Government Response and Aid
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has declared a two-day state mourning and will oversee the rescue operations. The Prime Minister’s Office has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those deceased. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has pledged Rs 5 crore in assistance to Kerala.
The weather department has issued a red alert for several districts, including Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasargod, predicting further heavy rain in the coming days. Authorities have warned of potential additional landslides as rainfall continues.
Political and Public Reactions
Scheduled visits by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi to Wayanad have been canceled due to the severe weather conditions. Kerala Health Minister Veena George also faced a minor accident while traveling to the affected area but is reported to be receiving first aid.
