89 Killed in Wayanad Landslides: Rescue Operations in Full Swing
In a devastating turn of events, massive landslides have struck Wayanad district in Kerala, claiming the lives of at least 89 people. The landslides, which occurred on Tuesday morning amid heavy rainfall, have left hundreds feared trapped. This calamity has prompted a red alert for several districts in Kerala.
Landslides Hit Wayanad: Areas Most Affected
The landslides hit multiple hilly areas near Meppadi, including Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha. The destruction has been severe, with reports indicating that many have been washed away in the Chaliyar river. The situation has been exacerbated by continuous rainfall and blocked roads, complicating rescue efforts.
Rescue Operations Underway: Military and Air Support Deployed
The Indian Army has mobilized 225 personnel, including medical teams, to assist in the rescue operations. Additionally, two Air Force helicopters, a Mi-17 and an ALH (Advanced Light Helicopter), have been deployed to aid in reaching inaccessible areas. The Indian Navy is also preparing to join the rescue efforts.
Kerala’s Minister Veena George has announced that a bridge connecting the affected areas to Chooralmala has been washed away. Efforts are underway to repair infrastructure and ensure that those affected receive necessary medical treatment.
Prime Minister Modi Announces Compensation
In response to the crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of full support from the central government. The Prime Minister’s Office has announced a compensation package: Rs 2 lakh for the families of those killed and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
Destruction and Challenges in Rescue Operations
The landslides have left a path of devastation. Uprooted trees, destroyed houses, and vehicles stranded in floodwaters paint a grim picture of the disaster. Rescue operations have been hampered by incessant rain and large boulders blocking access routes. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has dispatched a delegation of five ministers to oversee the ongoing relief efforts and ensure effective coordination.
Rahul Gandhi Expresses Condolences
Former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi has expressed deep anguish over the tragedy. In a statement on X, he conveyed his condolences and highlighted the ongoing rescue efforts. Congress MP KC Venugopal mentioned that both Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi might visit Wayanad to provide support and oversee the relief operations.
Red Alert Issued: Precautionary Measures Advised
The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rain across several districts in Kerala, including Kasargod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, and Idukki. Locals and tourists are advised to exercise extreme caution and stay updated with weather forecasts.
