The accused remains on the run, and police are conducting a manhunt to arrest him. This Pune rape case is a matter of grave concern for civil society.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar stated on Wednesday that the Pune rape case accused deserves nothing less than the death penalty. He has directed the Pune Police Commissioner to investigate the alleged rape of a woman inside a stationary state transport bus at the Swargate depot and swiftly arrest the accused. The accused, who is currently on the run, used a mask to hide his identity after committing the crime. The Pune Crime Branch has deployed 13 teams, along with a dog squad, to arrest the accused. I have directed the Pune Police Commissioner to personally look into this matter and arrest the accused immediately,” Pawar stated.
Pawar also mentioned that the Maharashtra Chief Minister has taken cognizance of the incident and has given necessary instructions to the police. “Instructions have been given to the Minister of Women and Child Development and the Chairperson of the State Women’s Commission to provide justice, psychological support, and all possible assistance to the victim,” he added. The government is committed to supporting the victim.
Pune Rape Case Details
The incident occurred when the woman was waiting for a bus to Phaltan in the adjoining Satara district at one of the platforms at approximately 5:45 am. According to the woman’s account, while she was waiting for the bus, a man approached her and engaged her in conversation, referring to her as ‘didi’ (sister), and informed her that the bus to Satara had arrived at another platform.
He then led her to an empty ‘Shiv Shahi’ AC bus parked elsewhere on the sprawling station premises. As the lights inside the bus were not switched on, she initially hesitated to enter, but the man assured her that it was the correct vehicle. He then followed her inside and raped her before fleeing, according to her statement to the police.
