Aakhir Tak – In Depth
Amidst chaos over the CAG report, Atishi, along with 20 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs, were suspended from the Delhi Assembly. The suspension, lasting three days, follows an uproar over the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report concerning the liquor policy. This report led to the arrest of several prominent leaders, including party chief Arvind Kejriwal.
Disruption of Lt Governor’s Address
At the commencement of the session, Lt Governor VK Saxena’s address was disrupted by AAP legislators. The MLAs resorted to loud sloganeering against the BJP government, causing significant disruption in the House.
Uproar and Suspension in the House
Speaker Vijender Gupta repeatedly requested the MLAs to remain calm, but they persisted in disrupting the Lt Governor’s speech. Consequently, the Speaker suspended 21 MLAs, including Atishi, for the day.
Atishi’s Allegation
Following their suspension, the MLAs staged a sit-in protest on the Assembly premises. Atishi alleged that the BJP had disrespected BR Ambedkar by removing his portrait from the Chief Minister’s office. “The BJP has shown its true colours by removing Babasaheb Ambedkar’s portrait. Does the party believe that (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi can replace Babasaheb?” she stated.
Pledge to Continue Protest
Atishi vowed to continue the protest until Dr. BR Ambedkar’s portrait is reinstated. The suspended AAP lawmakers chanted slogans such as “Babashaeb ka ye apman nahin sahega Hindustan (India will not tolerate this insult to Babasaheb).”
Liquor Policy Scam
The scam relates to irregularities in the formulation of the now-defunct liquor policy for 2021-22. This matter has also led to the arrests of Kejriwal’s former deputy Manish Sisodia, former minister Satyendar Jain, and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh. The CAG report has highlighted critical issues, resulting in the suspensions and protests. The government is investigating this matter, determined to punish all wrongdoers. The opposition keeps pressuring the government regarding this issue.
