Russian General Killed in Moscow, Ukraine’s Security Service Claims Responsibility
A high-ranking Russian general was killed in an explosion in Moscow on Tuesday. Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defence Forces (NBC), died in an explosion outside a residential building. The explosion occurred when a bomb hidden in a scooter detonated. Russia’s Investigative Committee reported that another person was also killed alongside Kirillov. The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) has claimed responsibility for the killing.
In a statement, the agency said, “The security service of Ukraine killed Russian General Kirillov in a special operation in Moscow.” According to Russian investigative agencies, the bomb was concealed within an electric scooter. The blast resulted in the death of Kirillov and another individual. An investigative committee stated, “Igor Kirillov, the head of the radiation, chemical and biological protection forces of the armed forces of the Russian Federation, and his assistant were killed.”
Visuals from the scene showed a shattered entrance to a building littered with rubble and two bodies lying in the blood-stained snow. Reuters footage from the scene showed a police cordon. A criminal case has been filed following the incident. Russia’s radioactive, chemical, and biological defense troops, known as RKhBZ, are specialized forces that operate in conditions of radioactive, chemical, and biological contamination.
On Monday, Ukrainian prosecutors charged Kirillov in absentia with the alleged use of banned chemical weapons in Ukraine, a claim Russia has denied. This information was released by the Security Service of Ukraine, according to the Kyiv Independent.
