Aakhir Tak – In Depth
Amid deteriorating air quality in Delhi-NCR, a survey conducted by Local Circles has highlighted that 69% of families have at least one member affected by pollution-related health issues. The survey included over 21,000 respondents and showed alarming AQI levels peaking at 999 on Diwali night in several areas.
The findings indicated that 62% of families reported burning eyes, while 46% experienced a runny or congested nose. About 31% of respondents cited breathing issues or asthma, and another 31% mentioned headaches. Additionally, 23% expressed anxiety or difficulty concentrating, and 15% noted sleep disturbances. However, 31% of participants reported no pollution-related health concerns.
The survey pointed out that people already suffering from respiratory problems like asthma, bronchitis, and COPD are likely to face more severe challenges due to hazardous AQI post-Diwali.
Coping Strategies for Pollution
The survey also explored how residents are preparing to cope with the worsening air quality, which ranges from 300-500 AQI and could double within a week. Of 10,630 respondents, 15% plan to leave the city temporarily, while 9% intend to stay indoors, enhancing their diet with immunity-boosting foods and drinks. About 23% plan to use air purifiers in addition to these measures.
Responses varied, with some opting for normal routines with outdoor masks and immunity-boosting foods. Meanwhile, 15% combined masks with healthy diets, and 23% relied solely on air purifiers. A significant portion of the population expressed readiness to face the pollution with minimal intervention.
