Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a reduction in immigration numbers starting 2025, introducing stricter rules for temporary foreign workers. He stated that companies will now have to provide valid reasons why they cannot hire Canadian workers before employing foreign workers. This will make it harder for foreign workers to secure jobs in the country.
According to a Canadian government source, the number of new permanent residents will be reduced to 395,000 in 2025, down from the current year’s target of 485,000. This number will further decrease to 380,000 in 2026 and 365,000 in 2027.
Trudeau’s decision comes as Canada faces a severe housing crisis, exacerbated by rising immigration. The country’s growing population has pushed housing demand and prices to new heights, leading to frustration among Canadian citizens.
Polls show that a significant portion of Canadians believe that immigration levels are too high. This issue is expected to remain prominent in the run-up to the next federal election in 2025. Trudeau’s immigration cut follows a recent reduction in the number of study permits for international students, with a 35% decrease expected in 2024. The government will issue 437,000 student permits in 2025, a 10% reduction compared to 2024.
In recent months, Trudeau’s Liberal Party has seen a dip in public opinion polls, as opposition leader Pierre Poilievre from the Conservative Party continues to gain ground. Trudeau faces mounting pressure to address the housing and immigration challenges that have become central issues in Canada.
