Aakhir Tak – In Depth
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan recently disclosed the retention plans for MS Dhoni in IPL 2025. Viswanathan shared a message from Dhoni stating that he would inform the team of his decision before October 31. While Dhoni hinted that IPL 2024 might be his last season, CSK’s failure to reach the playoffs could lead to a change in those plans.
“We also want Dhoni to play in the CSK team. But Dhoni has not confirmed it to us yet,” Kasi Viswanathan stated. It is vital for CSK that Dhoni plays at least one more season, as speculation about his return is growing.
With the return of the uncapped player rule, teams can retain players who have not played international cricket for five years at a cost of ₹4 crore. Dhoni, who last played for India in the 2019 World Cup semi-final, is likely to be included in this retention strategy by CSK.
CSK aims to retain its core for the IPL 2025 season. IPL organizers announced that each team can retain a maximum of six players from their existing squad. This includes up to five capped players and two uncapped players.
Dhoni played all 14 matches last season, scoring 161 runs with a strike rate of 220. In the 2023 season, he led CSK to their fifth title, scoring 104 runs with a strike rate of 182.46.
Acknowledging his age and abilities, Dhoni has made it clear that his future will depend on auction and retention rules. Nevertheless, he remains one of the most sought-after players in the IPL.
