Aakhir Tak – In Depth
Canada’s recent claims of India’s involvement with the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang have escalated diplomatic tensions between the two countries. Canada has alleged that Indian agents on its soil are cooperating with the Bishnoi gang to eliminate pro-Khalistani elements. The gang, already in the limelight for its criminal activities in India, has been linked to organized crimes, including the assassination of key figures such as the late NCP leader Baba Siddique and Sidhu Moose Wala.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) held a press conference where they tied Indian government agents to a series of violent activities targeting the South Asian community, particularly pro-Khalistan supporters. Although Ottawa has made these serious allegations, they have not yet provided any solid evidence to back their claims. The allegations have fueled an already tense relationship, with New Delhi rejecting these charges, calling them baseless, and accusing Canada of harboring Khalistani terrorists.
During the press conference, RCMP Assistant Commissioner Brigitte Gauvin elaborated that the Bishnoi group, an organized crime syndicate known in India, is believed to be collaborating with Indian agents in these attacks. India, on the other hand, has been accusing Canada of providing a safe haven to Khalistani terrorists and criminals from Punjab who are allegedly involved in organized crime.
This diplomatic row between Canada and India has intensified, with the Indian government recalling its ambassador to Ottawa and expelling several Canadian diplomats. Despite these allegations, the Indian government maintains that Canada has not provided any evidence, and they view these accusations as politically motivated, particularly as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faces domestic pressures and concerns about vote bank politics.
In previous years, India has continuously raised concerns about Canada’s immigration policies, which have allegedly allowed criminals to seek refuge. Notably, the Indian government has highlighted incidents like the assassination of Sidhu Moose Wala, for which the Bishnoi gang took responsibility, as evidence of Canada’s harboring of dangerous criminals.
The latest accusations coincide with renewed tensions following Baba Siddique’s murder, for which the Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility, but the connection to Indian agents remains unproven. These claims are likely Ottawa’s attempt to lend weight to its allegations against India, though the absence of concrete evidence makes it a diplomatic standoff with far-reaching consequences.
