Aakhir Tak – In Depth
A Hezbollah drone successfully penetrated Israel’s Iron Dome air-defense system on Sunday, striking an Israeli army base. The attack led to the deaths of four soldiers and injured 60 others. Following this incident, Israel has initiated an investigation into how its defense system was breached. The drone targeted a military installation near Binyamina, located approximately 64 km north of Tel Aviv.
Reports indicate that the drone used was likely a Mirsad-1, based on Iranian designs, with a range of 120 km and a top speed of 370 km per hour. It can carry up to 40 kg of explosives. Hezbollah has reportedly deployed this drone model for over two decades.
This is not the first instance of Hezbollah drones entering Israeli airspace undetected. In April, a Hezbollah drone flew for nine minutes over western Galilee before returning to southern Lebanon. The latest attack involved the launch of multiple drones under the cover of a rocket barrage, aiming to overwhelm Israeli defense systems.
Israeli media state that the Iron Dome struggles to detect small, low-flying drones like the Mirsad-1. This incident has raised concerns about Israel’s vulnerabilities to drone threats from Hezbollah, prompting discussions about enhancing their defense capabilities.
