Independent MLA Payare Lal Sharma Set to Join National Conference After Jammu and Kashmir Election Victory
Independent MLA Payare Lal Sharma, who won from Jammu and Kashmir’s Inderwal Assembly seat, has decided to join the National Conference. Sharma, who rebelled against the National Conference after being denied a ticket, contested as an independent candidate and emerged victorious.
According to sources, Sharma plans to officially join the National Conference soon. He narrowly defeated senior leader Gulam Mohammad Saroori by a margin of 643 votes. Sharma secured 14,195 votes, while Saroori, also an independent candidate, garnered 13,552 votes. Saroori had previously won the Inderwal seat twice.
If Sharma joins the National Conference, the party’s strength in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly will increase from 42 to 43 seats.
The National Conference emerged as the single largest party in the Jammu and Kashmir elections with 42 seats. The party is set to form the next government in the Union Territory in coalition with the Congress, which secured six seats.
Following the election results, National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah announced that Omar Abdullah would lead the coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir. Farooq Abdullah stated, “The people have given their mandate. They have shown that they do not accept the decision of August 5 (abrogation of Article 370). Omar Abdullah will be the Chief Minister.”
Omar Abdullah won both the constituencies he contested – Budgam and Ganderbal – with a strong majority.
