Haryana Assembly Elections: 61% Voting in High-Stakes BJP vs Congress Contest
A voter turnout of 61% was recorded in Haryana’s single-phase Assembly elections on Saturday, with polling from 7 am to 6 pm. Nuh recorded the highest turnout at 68.28%, while Gurugram had the lowest at 49.97%. This election is crucial for selecting 90 legislators, with 1,031 candidates, including 101 women and 464 independents.
Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Congress candidate Vinesh Phogat, and other key leaders are contesting their political fates. The ruling BJP aims for a third consecutive term, while the Congress hopes to return to power after a decade.
The BJP formed its first government in Haryana in 2014, winning 47 seats under the Modi wave. Saini highlighted the development work undertaken by his government, stating that Haryana has now become a “developed state.” The Congress, buoyed by a strong showing in the recent Lok Sabha elections, has high hopes. Its manifesto offers seven guarantees, including legal assurance for MSPs and a monthly allowance of ₹2,000 for women.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to the people of Haryana to exercise their voting rights, tweeting, “Today is voting for the Haryana Assembly elections. I appeal to all voters to be a part of this holy festival of democracy and set a new record of voting.”
In the previous Assembly elections in 2019, the BJP won 40 seats, Congress 31, and JJP 10. This time, over two crore voters will cast their votes across 20,632 polling booths.
