In a significant statement, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has expressed openness to considering any evidence provided by India regarding the extradition of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik. During his exclusive interview with India Today, Ibrahim clarified that as long as Zakir Naik refrains from causing disturbances or posing a security threat, Malaysia sees no immediate need to take action against him. However, the Malaysian leader emphasized that his country is ready to evaluate any legal evidence presented by India for Naik’s extradition.
Anwar Ibrahim’s comments come amid ongoing diplomatic discussions between Malaysia and India, where Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar raised the extradition issue. Naik, a Mumbai-born Islamic preacher, fled India in 2016 amid accusations of promoting hatred and money laundering. Despite India’s requests, he was granted permanent residency in Malaysia by the previous government led by Mahathir Mohamed.
On other matters, Anwar Ibrahim chose not to engage in India’s domestic issue concerning Kashmir, highlighting that Malaysia has maintained a neutral stance. He also acknowledged the challenges posed by the Rohingya refugee crisis, stressing that while Malaysia is committed to protecting the refugees, the influx of over 200,000 refugees has been a significant strain on the country’s resources.
The Malaysian PM’s visit to India underscores the ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations. Ibrahim extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur next year, which Modi has accepted.
