Women’s T20 World Cup: India Suffer 58-run Defeat to New Zealand in Opening Match
India’s Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign began on a disappointing note, as they suffered a heavy 58-run defeat to New Zealand in their opening match on Friday, in Dubai. Chasing a target of 161 runs, India was bowled out for 102 in 19 overs, with captain Harmanpreet Kaur top-scoring with just 15 runs. This marks New Zealand’s largest-ever win against India in T20 Internationals.
India Under Pressure from the Start
The Indian batting lineup crumbled under pressure. Harmanpreet’s 15 was the highest score, but no other player managed to stand firm. This loss comes as a huge setback for India, especially in a tough group. Captain Harmanpreet had earlier expressed confidence in this Indian side, but they were completely outplayed by New Zealand today.
Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma Fail to Deliver
Chasing 161, India lost Shafali Verma early, caught by Kiwi spinner Eden Carson in the second over. Smriti Mandhana, India’s most consistent batter, was also dismissed cheaply, as Rosemary Mair’s brilliant bowling sent Harmanpreet packing with an inswinger. New Zealand’s Lea Tahuhu contributed by dismissing Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh, further diminishing India’s hopes.
Sophie Devine’s Dominating Fifty
New Zealand’s captain Sophie Devine led from the front with a crucial 57 off 36 balls. On a tricky pitch, she guided her team to a competitive total of 160/4. Her partnership with Brooke Halliday ensured New Zealand posted a challenging target, which ultimately proved too much for India.
Controversial Run-Out Decision
A controversial moment in the 14th over sparked discussions when Amelia Kerr was declared not out despite being short of her crease. Harmanpreet Kaur’s quick throw appeared to have run Kerr out, but the umpires deemed the ball dead after the first run, allowing Kerr to continue. This decision upset the Indian camp, and coach Amol Muzumdar was seen discussing it with the fourth umpire.
India’s Disappointing Fielding Display
India’s fielding woes continued as they missed crucial opportunities. Richa Ghosh dropped a vital catch, and Renuka Singh’s misfield allowed New Zealand openers Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer to capitalize. Though bowlers like Asha Sobhana and Arundhati Reddy tried to pull India back into the game after the Powerplay, Sophie Devine’s powerful knock sealed New Zealand’s win.
