Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia Join Congress in Haryana Poll Boost

Wrestling champions Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia have officially joined the Congress party ahead of the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections. Their decision came shortly after meeting with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on September 4. The wrestlers’ move is expected to bolster Congress’s prospects in the elections scheduled for October.

At a press conference held in Delhi, senior Congress leader KC Venugopal welcomed Phogat and Punia into the party. The wrestlers’ induction came amid their ongoing legal battle against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, former BJP MP and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief, whom they accused of harassing junior wrestlers.

Phogat expressed her gratitude towards the Congress, highlighting the party’s support during the challenging protests against Singh. “The Congress supported us when no one else did. Our battle will continue in the courts,” she emphasized. She also criticized the BJP for allegedly tarnishing her reputation, stating that despite false claims, she continued to compete at national and international levels.

Punia echoed similar sentiments, accusing the BJP of neglecting women wrestlers. He pointed out that Congress stood by the athletes, unlike the ruling party. Both wrestlers also met Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, further solidifying their association with the party.

Phogat’s political journey was further marked by her resignation from Indian Railways, where she expressed her pride in serving the nation but decided to focus on her new path. This move, along with Punia’s support, is seen as a strategic step by Congress to secure the influential Jat votes in Haryana.

The upcoming Haryana polls on October 5 will determine the impact of these prominent athletes’ entry into politics, with counting scheduled for October 8. Congress hopes to capitalize on the growing discontent against the BJP in the state.
