US Silence on Bangladesh Chaos: What’s Behind It?
The recent chaos in Bangladesh, marked by hundreds of targeted attacks on Hindus, has raised significant global concern. Despite these events, the US, often regarded as a global champion of human rights, remains notably silent. The lack of any mention of Bangladesh or the plight of its Hindu minority in the Modi-Biden talks further highlights this strategic quiet.
Background on the US and Bangladesh Relations
Historically, the US has not always aligned with India’s interests regarding Bangladesh. During the 1971 Liberation War, the US opposed the creation of Bangladesh. Over the years, it has continued to support the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which has often acted against India’s interests. Even under Sheikh Hasina’s leadership, the US has taken measures perceived as undermining her government.
US Tactics to Weaken Sheikh Hasina’s Government
According to experts like Brahma Chellaney and Shafquat Rabbee, the US has systematically weakened Sheikh Hasina’s government over the past decade. Through sanctions, critical reports, and strategic support to opposition groups, the US has gradually undermined Hasina’s standing both domestically and internationally.
The sanctions against the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in 2021 crippled one of Hasina’s main tools for maintaining control, reducing extrajudicial killings and disappearances in Bangladesh. This has further empowered the civil society and Hasina’s critics.
Strategic Silence Amidst the Post-Hasina Chaos
With the recent regime change in Bangladesh, where Muhammad Yunus has taken over as the head of a military-backed caretaker government, the US appears to be in favor of this transition. Yunus was a key figure in the ‘One-Eleven’ depoliticization process, which sought to remove the country’s top political players, including Sheikh Hasina.
By remaining silent on the current chaos and violence in Bangladesh, the US might be positioning itself to support a government that aligns with its own interests.
India’s Position and Future Considerations
As Bangladesh continues to experience political and social turmoil, India must be cautious about its strategic ally, the US. The history of US involvement in Bangladesh and other neighboring regions suggests that American interests may not always align with those of India. Going forward, India should remain vigilant and aware of these dynamics to protect its interests in the region.
