Uddhav Thackeray Criticizes PM Modi’s Apology Over Shivaji Statue Collapse
Uddhav Thackeray, a prominent leader of Shiv Sena (UBT), criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his apology over the collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s statue in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg. Thackeray, leading a massive rally in Mumbai along with the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, claimed the apology “smacked of arrogance.”
The protest rally began at Hutatma Chowk and culminated at the Gateway of India, where Thackeray addressed a large gathering. He stated that the people of Maharashtra would never forgive the insult to the legendary Maratha warrior king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The incident involved the statue of Shivaji Maharaj, which fell on August 26 after being inaugurated by PM Modi on Navy Day, December 4, 2023.
In his speech, Thackeray said, “Did you notice the arrogance in the apology? One deputy chief minister was smiling. The mistake cannot be forgiven. We have gathered here to demand ‘BJP get out of India.'”
MVA Leaders Rally Against the BJP
Thackeray, alongside senior leaders like Sharad Pawar and Nana Patole, took part in a ‘jode maro andolan’ (hitting with slippers) protest, where they symbolically hit posters of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar.
Addressing the crowd, Sharad Pawar said, “The collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s statue is an example of corruption. It is an insult to all Shiv premis.”
Nana Patole also criticized the state government and mentioned that the PM’s apology was politically motivated, considering the upcoming state elections.
PM Modi’s Apology Draws Ire
Prime Minister Modi had apologized on Friday, stating, “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not just a name or a king. For us, he is our deity.” However, Thackeray and other MVA leaders viewed the apology as insincere and disrespectful.
Thackeray mocked PM Modi’s past “guarantees,” referencing incidents like the leakages in Ayodhya’s Ram Temple and the new Parliament complex. He urged the MVA cadre to work together to ensure the BJP’s defeat, stating, “The collapse of the statue is an insult to the soul of Maharashtra.”
The MVA leaders vowed to prevent similar incidents from happening again and pledged to protect the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
