Former President Donald Trump recently shared a photo of Vice President Kamala Harris and her family on Truth Social. This comes in the wake of Trump’s controversial comments questioning Harris’s racial identity.
Trump’s remarks, which suggested Harris had “turned Black” recently, have sparked significant backlash. His statements have been criticized by the White House as “repulsive and insulting.”
Trump’s Controversial Comments
In a recent event held by the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) in Chicago, Trump questioned whether Kamala Harris identifies as Indian or Black. He remarked, “She was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn Black.” Trump further added, “I respect either one, but she obviously doesn’t, because she was Indian all the way, and then all of a sudden she made a turn, and she went – she became a Black person.”

Harris’s Response
Kamala Harris, who identifies as both Black and Asian, responded to Trump’s comments by condemning them as divisive. Harris, who began her presidential campaign on July 21 after President Joe Biden withdrew his bid, has faced numerous racist and sexist attacks. “Let me just say, the American people deserve better. We deserve a leader who tells the truth, does not respond with hostility, and understands that our differences do not divide us,” Harris stated.
Harris was born to Jamaican and Indian parents. Her father, Donald Harris, hails from Jamaica, while her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, immigrated to the US from Chennai in 1958. Harris identifies herself simply as ‘American’.
Impact on the Presidential Campaign
Harris’s ethnic identity has become a focal point in the ongoing presidential campaign. Indian-origin Republican Vivek Ramaswamy has also criticized her for purportedly using her Indian roots selectively. The controversy surrounding Harris’s identity continues to generate significant discussion and debate.
Trump’s sharing of the Harris family photo and his subsequent comments have intensified discussions about racial identity in the US. The ongoing debate highlights the complex and often contentious nature of identity politics in contemporary American politics.
