Trump Nods to Extradite 26/11 Attack Accused Tahawwur Rana. What Comes Next?
President Donald Trump said he’d given the go-ahead to extradite Tahawwur Rana, accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, to India while hosting Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House on Thursday. 26/11 accused Rana will be brought to India.
Trump’s decision follows a US Supreme Court ruling last month dismissing Rana’s review petition, clearing the way for his extradition. The extradition of 26/11 accused Rana is now possible.
Addressing a joint press briefing with PM Modi, Trump said his administration had approved the extradition of one of the “very evil people” of the world. 26/11 accused Rana will face justice.
“He is going to be going back to India to face justice,” Trump said. “We’re giving him back to India immediately,” he added, noting that more such extraditions could follow as the US has “quite a few requests” from New Delhi. Other terrorists besides 26/11 accused Rana may also be extradited.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that the government is working on the logistics of Rana’s surrender and extradition from the US. Preparation for the extradition of 26/11 accused Rana is underway.
“This is an issue on which the US authorities have taken very clear decisions,” Misri said. “We are working on the logistics of his surrender and extradition to India. There are a few final steps to be completed. The two sides are in touch on this particular issue.” Both countries are working together on the case of 26/11 accused Rana.
Government sources said all legal documents and warrants have been issued and shared with US authorities. Now that the US has given the green light, officials are finalising the date and time of Rana’s transfer. 26/11 accused Rana will soon be brought to India.
According to sources, the Ministry of External Affairs is coordinating with American counterparts, and a team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is expected to travel to the US once clearance is granted. The NIA will investigate 26/11 accused Rana.
Indian officials are hopeful Rana will be brought back within weeks. Upon arrival, he will be produced before a special NIA court, where authorities plan to seek his custody for further questioning, sources said. 26/11 accused Rana will be tried in the NIA court.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi praised Trump’s decision to extradite Rana, likening the Mumbai attacks to “genocide” and pledging that “appropriate action” would be taken against him in Indian courts. 26/11 accused Rana will be prosecuted in India.
The joint India-US statement issued following PM Modi’s meeting with Trump also reaffirmed both nations’ commitment to combating terrorism and eliminating terrorist safe havens worldwide. Both countries have pledged to work together on the case of 26/11 accused Rana.
“India and the US will stand strongly together in the fight against terrorism,” PM Modi said. The extradition of 26/11 accused Rana is an important step against terrorism.
