Thane School Assault Case: Cleaner Arrested, Massive Protests Erupt in Badlapur

A horrific incident has rocked Maharashtra’s Thane District, where two three-year-old girls were allegedly sexually assaulted by a male cleaning staffer in a school. The assault, which occurred on August 12–13, has triggered widespread outrage and protests, with local trains being halted by agitators at Badlapur railway station.

The incident came to light after both girls, who were studying in pre-primary classes, refused to go to school. Concerned, their parents questioned them, leading to the revelation of the assault that had taken place in the school’s toilet. The parents immediately filed a complaint, and the police swiftly arrested the accused, Akshay Shinde. He has been remanded to three days of police custody.

In response to the public outcry, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by top police officer Arti Singh to probe the incident. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde assured that the case would be fast-tracked, emphasizing that justice will be served without delay.

CCTV Malfunction and Administrative Lapses: During the investigation, it was discovered that the CCTV cameras in the school were not operational on the day of the incident. This has raised serious concerns about the safety measures in place within educational institutions. Maharashtra Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar announced that the government would issue a circular mandating all schools to ensure functional CCTV cameras. Additionally, a committee similar to the Vishaka committee will be established in schools to address such issues proactively.

The school administration has suspended the principal, the class teacher, and the staff responsible for the children’s safety. A notice has also been issued to the school, and the senior police inspector who allegedly delayed registering the case has been suspended.

Protests and Public Outrage: The incident has sparked massive protests in Badlapur. Enraged residents, along with local political leaders, have taken to the streets, blocking local train services at Badlapur railway station for over six hours. As part of the protest, shops and establishments in the area were closed, and the school where the assault occurred was shut down.

The situation escalated when protestors began pelting stones outside the school, leading to several arrests. The authorities are on high alert to prevent further escalation and ensure that the investigation proceeds without interference.

This shocking case has once again highlighted the urgent need for stringent safety measures in schools to protect children from such heinous acts. The SIT is expected to provide a thorough investigation, and the government has vowed to deliver justice swiftly.
