In a significant move to ensure the safety of medical professionals, the Supreme Court of India has ordered the formation of a 10-member National Task Force (NTF). This task force, established under the Union Health Ministry, is mandated to monitor and develop actionable plans to protect doctors and other healthcare workers from violence, including gender-based violence, at medical establishments.
Headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, the Supreme Court bench emphasized the urgent need for institutional safety norms in healthcare facilities across the country. The decision comes amid nationwide protests triggered by the tragic rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The task force includes notable figures from the medical field, such as Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, Director General of Medical Services (Navy), and Dr. D Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman and Managing Director of the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology and AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad. Other members include leading professionals from AIIMS, NIMHANS, and other prestigious institutions.
The NTF is tasked with creating an enforceable national protocol for dignified and safe working conditions for all medical professionals, from interns to senior doctors. This protocol will address violence prevention and ensure a secure working environment for healthcare workers.
The task force is expected to submit an interim report within three weeks and a final report within two months from the date of the Supreme Court order. The Union Government is also required to file the data with an affidavit within one month.
This decision highlights the Supreme Court’s commitment to addressing the systemic issues affecting the safety of medical professionals in India, ensuring they work in an environment free from violence and fear.
