Rohit Sharma Likely to Miss First Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy
Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma is likely to miss the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia, scheduled for November 22 in Perth. Rohit reportedly informed the chief selector and top officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he may opt out of the Test due to personal matters.
The 37-year-old expressed that he might withdraw from the Perth Test if the issue persists. However, the Indian board has yet to receive official confirmation from Sharma. Currently, Rohit is on a break as India participates in the T20 series against Bangladesh. Earlier, he played a pivotal role in leading India to a 2-0 series victory over the Tigers.
Rohit’s contribution in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is crucial as India aims to win their third Test series on Australian soil, following victories in 2018-19 and 2020-21. The Perth Test will be followed by a Day-Night Test at the Adelaide Oval on December 6. The Gabba Test starts on December 14, with the iconic Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from December 26. The final Test will take place at the Sydney Cricket Ground starting January 3.
Rohit has played seven Tests in Australia, scoring 408 runs at an average of 31.38, including three fifties and a top score of 63 not out. India is currently leading the table in the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle, having secured 98 points from eight wins out of 11 Tests.
