Aakhir Tak – In Depth
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi convened a crucial meeting today to assess the Congress party’s poll preparedness for the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections. This meeting is particularly significant following the party’s unexpected defeat in Haryana, where Congress failed to capitalize on anti-incumbency against the BJP.
The Congress, which was predicted to secure an outright win in Haryana, was defeated by the BJP, which won 48 seats compared to Congress’s 37 seats in the 90-seat Assembly. Following this setback, many members of the opposition INDIA bloc questioned Congress’s strategy and called for introspection.
In light of this, Rahul Gandhi has shifted his focus to Maharashtra, where the elections are either next month or in December. The Congress scion will meet with key leaders, including Maharashtra Congress Chief Nana Patole, and other party figures like Vijay Wadettiwar, Prithviraj Chavan, Balasaheb Thorat, Varsha Gaikwad, and Ramesh Chennithala. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge is also expected to attend the meeting.
Maharashtra is a pivotal state with 288 Assembly seats, and the upcoming elections are crucial for the party’s standing. Furthermore, the alliance within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising Congress, the Uddhav Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena, and Sharad Pawar’s faction of the NCP, is also seeking a larger share of seats. Congress faces the challenge of balancing the coalition dynamics while strengthening its own electoral strategy to boost its seat tally in the state.
