The Congress accused the Jammu and Kashmir administration on Saturday of sabotaging Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s election rally by failing to facilitate her helicopter landing in Billawar, Kathua district. Priyanka was scheduled to address a rally in support of former minister and party candidate Dr. Manohar Lal.
Priyanka Gandhi was supposed to attend public rallies in the Billawar and Bishnah constituencies in Jammu region late in the afternoon. However, her visit to Billawar could not happen as the helicopter was unable to land.
The Jammu and Kashmir Congress Committee’s (JKPCC) chief spokesperson, Ravinder Sharma, criticized the administration’s actions, claiming the rally was intentionally disrupted. He questioned why the landing site was set 35 kilometers away from the rally venue, at an isolated location, terming it as an attempt to sabotage the event.
Sharma demanded an inquiry into the incident and urged the Election Commission to investigate the matter. Addressing the Bishnah rally, Priyanka criticized the BJP for its ‘New Kashmir’ slogan, claiming that the region has been plunged into an “unprecedented crisis” under the party’s rule over the past ten years.
Speaking to a large gathering, Priyanka promised that Congress would restore Jammu and Kashmir’s dignity and honor. She vowed to reinstate the region’s statehood and revive the 150-year-old ‘Darbar Move’ practice. Additionally, she pledged to protect locals’ land and job rights and end the installation of smart meters.
“Pending domestic power bills will be waived, and the rehabilitation process for Kashmiri Pandits, initiated during Dr. Manmohan Singh’s tenure, will be resumed,” she said. Priyanka also expressed sadness over how the BJP has treated Jammu and Kashmir as a “political tool” for its benefit while inflaming emotions elsewhere in India.
The Congress leader further accused the Lieutenant Governor of ruling the region like a colony, exploiting its resources without accountability and serving corporate interests. She added, “Terrorism has increased, with 683 attacks claiming 260 security personnel and 170 civilian lives.”
