Nihon Hidankyo Awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize
The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo. This organization represents atomic bomb survivors (Hibakusha) from Hiroshima and Nagasaki. With member groups across all 47 Japanese prefectures, Nihon Hidankyo unites nearly all organized Hibakusha. Both its leaders and members are survivors themselves.
The Nobel Committee announced on its official X page that the organization received the peace prize for its “efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again.”
The Norwegian Nobel Committee stated, “This year’s Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo. This grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki is receiving the peace prize for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons.”
The committee wishes to honor all atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki who, despite physical suffering and painful memories, have chosen to cultivate hope and engagement for peace.
The Nobel Committee emphasized that this Japanese organization helps to “describe the indescribable, to think the unthinkable, and to somehow grasp the incomprehensible pain and suffering caused by nuclear weapons.”
